Traffic Regulations
Roads in Rijeka and Croatia generally are well-maintained, and rules are straightforward, though local specifics exist. Don't ignore them—fines are substantial, cameras are everywhere, and police may stop vehicles for document checks.
Speed limits follow standard European regulations:
- Within city limits: 50 km/h
- Public roads outside populated areas: 90 km/h
- Expressways: 110 km/h
- Toll motorways: 130 km/h
Local drivers sometimes attempt risky overtaking maneuvers—it's best to calmly let them pass. Elderly drivers, conversely, sometimes travel quite slowly; don't honk, as this is normal in Croatia.
Important traffic rules:
- All passengers must wear seatbelts.
- Children under 12 years old and under 150 cm tall can only be transported in special restraint devices or car seats.
- From November 1 to March 31, low beam headlights or daytime running lights must be activated at all times, regardless of weather or time of day. During other months, only in tunnels, fog, or rain.
- Phone calls while driving are permitted only through hands-free devices. Two earbuds are prohibited.
Police stops typically proceed calmly. Officers will request your license and vehicle documents. Behave politely, don't argue, and don't raise your voice.
Avoid unpaved roads during your travels, as insurance won't cover them.
Fuel Stations
Croatia has good fuel station coverage, especially in cities, coastal areas, and toll motorways. Stations are frequent, many operate 24/7, and larger facilities have restrooms and cafés.
Nearly everywhere accepts cash and bank cards. Automated stations accept cards only.
Rijeka has two types of fuel stations:
- Staffed stations. Most commonly, no one stands at the pumps—only a cashier in a booth. You take the nozzle yourself, fill up, remember your pump number, and proceed to the cashier.
- Automated (self-service) stations. You approach the pump and select your language on the terminal. Indicate the pump number and fuel type. Insert your card. The system often blocks a deposit of approximately €100. This is a temporary hold; the unused amount returns to your card later. At some stations, you can specify how many liters you want immediately, and only that amount will be blocked.
Parking
Free parking in Rijeka is available where there are no prohibiting signs or paid zone markings. In smaller towns, suburbs, or resort outskirts, such spots are common, sometimes just a few hundred meters from the center. However, in historic centers, including Rijeka's, free parking is nearly mythical.
Paid parking comes in two types:
- Barrier-controlled (covered or open). At entry, you take a ticket; at exit, you pay at the cashier or terminal. Time is usually unlimited, but don't lose your ticket. These lots are convenient for leaving your car for the day while exploring the old town.
- Street parking. Easily recognized by colored pavement markings and signs with the letter "P."
Car Booking Process in Rijeka
Arranging a rental in Rijeka through Localrent is quick and straightforward. There are no hidden conditions or unexpected charges when collecting your keys.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Specify the location and rental dates. Mark "Rijeka" as both pickup and return location. If desired, you can collect the car in one city and return it in another (this service may incur additional charges).
- Use filters to narrow the list of options. Select vehicles by transmission type, insurance type, vehicle class and make, and additional options. This helps immediately eliminate unsuitable variants.
- Choose an offer and review the conditions. Each vehicle listing shows the price, deposit amount (if applicable), and age and experience requirements.
- Add additional options if needed. For example, you might require a child seat or a second driver on the rental agreement. Enter the main driver's details and review the final rental price.
- Confirm the booking. Pay an advance of 15–20% of the total cost. After payment, you'll receive a voucher via email confirming your booking and the local rental company's contact details.
At the scheduled time, arrive at the pickup location in Rijeka. On-site, inspect the vehicle's condition, sign the agreement, and hit the road.
